What does Rehab involve for an alcoholic?
Although there are many different opinions about how to help an alcoholic recover from active addiction, there are some basics that most experts do agree on. What rehab will involve depends somewhat on the alcoholic’s condition is at the time of beginning rehab.
How functional is the alcoholic? Is the alcoholic still able to work everyday and support him or herself financially? What is the medical condition of the alcoholic? Is this person going to require some hospitalization before beginning active rehab services?
Unfortunately, the more functional an alcoholic is can be a detrement to convincing that person to enter rehab. If the alcoholic is still able to function daily in his or her job or career, that person may not feel the need for rehab. Many times it is a family member who is trying to obtain treatment for the alcoholic rather than the addicted person.
Once the alcoholic realized that there is a need for some type of treatment, and that person requests treatment, the decision has to be made whether the rehab should be inpatient or outpatient.
Perhaps the alcoholic will need to be hospitalized temporarily for the purpose of detoxifying from the affects of the alcohol abuse. In some cases, the patient could be in danger of dying without that intervention.
After that step has been completed, the alcoholic should be somewhat more receptive to an ongoing rehab situation. Usually an inpatient rehab is preferable. During this period of 30 days to several months in rehab, the alcoholic will be improving in many areas. Having steady nutritious meals, medications when necessary, and regular periods of sleep will be extremely helpful.
During the rehab, there will be educational meetings that will help the alcoholic to realize what happened that got his or her situation to this dangerous point. The patient will hopefully get beyond blame and get ready for a life of recovery.
Meetings involving other alcoholics sharing their stories is also very essential to recovery. In many rehab situations, patients are encouraged to write about their past experiences during their drinking career; then they will have the opportunity to discuss these things with a counselor.
Each step is laying the foundation that will make the alcoholic more secure and free from the danger of relapse.
